Keeping Individual Nest Box Records

Nest Box Records are running logs you keep for individual boxes you monitor. See example below. They can also record nesting attempts of other bird species, such as Bluebirds, House Wrens and Chickadees.
They let you see at a glance the history of each nesting attempt in that particular box from start to finish over the course of a season.
We find it helps to keep our records in a binder with numbered dividers to separate nesting attempt data for each box. In fact it’s a good idea to organize all your project records for a given year in sections in one binder for easy reference.

The entries are data you transfer from your Box Check Records onto individual Nest Box Record sheets. You can also add any remarks, concerns, or speculations you have regarding that particular nesting attempt.

The abbreviations on this data sheet the same as those used on the Making Tree Swallow Nest Box Checks in the field page. You can refer to that source for explanations and definitions.
On the other hand, you may well want to devise your own personal set of symbols.
The Nest Box Record displayed here also includes fields for adult age and color, plus adult and nestling banding data. A simpler Nest Box Record, short form, with no banding fields is also available.
